June 28 - 29, 2009 Oregon College of Art and Craft, Portland, Oregon (Details TBA - check their website)
The Twined Binding Participants will learn an innovative binding structure that was designed by the instructor. The Twined Binding employs a timeless technique that is seen in Plateau baskets, Medieval tapestries and in other items created by cultures across the globe. The finished books feature a rich, all-over pattern on the spine and the structure is ripe for exploration of variations on the basic design. The structure was featured in the Spring 2008 issue of The Bonefolder and the instructions have been translated into Dutch and featured in Hand Bookbinden, the journal of the Dutch Bookbinding Foundation.

April 3 - 5, 2009 Atelier 6000 , Bend, Oregon
Participants will create a multi-gathering book that draws on the structural elements of Ethiopian and Egyptian Coptic bindings. This sturdy 4-needle binding is perfect for journals, sketch books or artist's books where flat opening is desirable. We'll explore the various design opportunities the structure presents and each student will leave class with a substantial book that is a reflection of their own personal style. This is a good class for motivated beginners to get a firm footing in the basics of bookbinding, and for those with some experience to get another binding style under their belt. Details HERE
